Great White Shark cage diving trip  26/08/2007

Hi there everyone, hope you all enjoyed your cage diving excursion with marine dynamics. Below is a list of water conditions and stats about the sharks sighted on your trip, along with the best photos of the day.

Date: 26-08-07

Location:  Geldsteen

Sea condition: Rough

Water Temperature: 14.8C

Wind direction: NW

Current direction: SE

Wind speed: 10kts

Water visibility: 5m

Cloud coverage: 80%

Water depth: 11.3 m

Bait Type: yellowfin tuna and sardine

Arrival time: 09:45am

No of sharks sighted: 3

Respective individual lengths: 2.0-2.5m, 2.5-3.0m, 2.5m.

Note: Sometimes life can be so simple...short trip, only 6 divers, three very relaxed sharks. Spectacular southern right whale breeching in the distance as we set off to our dive site. First shark arrived quickly and was identified as a female, the other two sharks as males. shark 2 was a resight from previous day with a black scar down the left flank. Very active shark making some beautiful vertical approaches on the decoy and bait. Visibility remained clear for us and the water temperature stable at a higher 14.8 degrees. The sharks seemed to be arriving from a shallow kelp reef in between dyer island and joubertsdam...perhaps a sign the next few weeks we will be moving shark fever back in shore. Many thanks to all and hope you all enjoyed.

Wind speed: 5kts

Water visibility: 2-3m

Cloud coverage: 0%

No of sharks sighted: 5

Note: Very successful trip indeed with an enormous Great white shark joining us for our last cage of divers. This male shark (we named Shirley in confusion) was four metres long and made some spectacular passes by the cage and bait. All other sharks were identified as males, one with scars on the left pectoral fin, a resight from three days previous. water conditions were much calmer today and temperature of water was up to 14.3 degrees, with nice visibility. Many thanks to all, and to the film crew who joined us on board, regards.

Great White Shark cage diving trip  24/08/2007

morning & afternoon teams

Hi there everyone, hope you all enjoyed your cage diving excursion with marine dynamics. Below is a list of water conditions and stats about the sharks sighted on your trip, along with the best photos of the day.

Date: 24-08-07

Location:  Geldsteen

Sea condition: Rough

Water Temperature: 14.0C morning trip,

                            14.5 afternoon trip.

Wind direction: W

Current direction: E

Wind speed: 15kts

Water visibility: 2-3m

Cloud coverage: 100%

Water depth: 20 m

Bait Type: yellowfin tuna and sardine

Arrival time: 10:00 am, 14:00pm

No of sharks sighted: 6 first trip, 7 second trip.

Respective individual lengths: Trip 1: 2.0m, 2.5m, 2.0m, 3.0m, 2.0m, 3.5m.
Trip 2: 2.5m, 2.5m, 3.0m, 3.0m, 2.5m, 3.0m, 2.0m.
Note: Sharks started very slow as we tried the inshore location of joubertsdam for the second time this season. After 2 hours and a move to the Geldsteen sharks started to pick up. Those divers that managed to hold out on the sea sickness saw some excellent passes of sharks from the cage. By the afternoon trip we returned to our cage in the same location to be joined by seven fantastic sharks. All large male sharks very active around the boat making constant vertical approaches and passes at the decoy and bait. Infact, the afternoon trip felt more like a peak winter season trip in July! our third shark of the afternoon was easily recognisable by distinctive black bite mark scars around the left gills. He was very relaxed around the cage semi-breeching occasionally. He also had an old streamer tag right of dorsal fin. Very successful trips in all, many thanks to all, regards.

Sharks 3 and 5 were identified as females the rest male. shark 3 was a resight from 4 days ago recognisable by the nick below dorsal fin on left side. In all the sharks were very active around the bait and decoy, making multiple approaches at both and giving divers some excellent cage sightings. Also very fortunate to see a southern right whale breech by the boat. many thanks to all, regards.
